President Plans to Put Migrants At Military Sites

Tactic would drastically reshape enforcement of immigration

Hello! For the new folks, the format is simple; I read the top story in the New York Times each morning so that you don’t have to. If you were forwarded this, you can subscribe here.

I read this morning’s paper on the subway to the financial district where I played squash…proper American Psycho style

Give me your tired, your huddled masses. Yearning to breathe free. Especially if they came to America in the last century.

That last line is an addition to the poem by Emma Lazarus whose verses adorn the Statue of Liberty. But as we might be aware, America has a conflicted relationship with immigrants these days. Yesterday I saw a story that ICE agents have been detaining native Americans, seeking to deport them. I couldn’t believe it but then I could believe it, if you know what I mean.

I’m also an immigrant to the United States. But I’m a white British man and so people assume I deserve it. Elon Musk came here and worked illegally. Melania Trump came here and definitely only worked as a model. What this country really doesn’t like is poor brown people. That’s what “immigrant” really means.

Today’s lead story focuses on plans by the Trump Administration to house migrants in military sites across the country. I won’t bore you with the details because the overall plan is encapsulated in the hatred of poor brown people. Suffice to say the details of the plan are still being worked out, conditions in these facilities are likely to be bad, and the real goal is to stoke voter loyalty from Trump’s base.

His immigration czar Stephen Miller is quoted saying “do not come here illegally.”

You’re welcome.
